Why are there no AA Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Batteries? All the best rechargeable AA and AAA size batteries use NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) chemistry, but lithium-ion batteries can store even more energy. There are lithium-ion batteries in other forms - such as RCR-123A. Why are there no AA or AAA lithium-ion batteries?

Reason is chemistry. Typical Lithium cells work on the 3V range, defined by the chemical reactions inside. No 1.5V cell can be built.
Battery manufacturers will not produce 3V Lithium AA or AAA batteries to avoid users installing them in 1.5V sockets - so no device will burn and no legal claims will arise...

Is there a place I can get standard AA size rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries? Li-Ion technology has been around for many years, so why can't I find rechargeable AA, AAA, D, or other standard sized Lithiums at the store?
Gabriel W replied: "Lithium-ion batteries are not available in standard sizes. They could be mistaken for regular AA batterys and put into a non-lithium ion charger that could ignite it. Also, because Li-ion batteries operate at much higher voltage (typically 3.7V per cell) than the 1.2 to 1.5V of most cell batteries, designing a 1.5V lithium-ion cell would be expensive."

Lithium disposable battery cells are real cool, but Li-Ion rechargeables are where it's at. First it was Ni-Cad, then it was NiMH... now it's Li-Ion. Use them, but get a charger designed to deal with them. They will explode, if charged wrong. Lithium is very poisonous, if inhaled.

why can't I buy AA or AAA lithium ion RECHARGEABLE batteries? I have looked and looked and looked. Lithium Ion batteries are the BEST for rechargeable, but I can find no one that sells them in the AA, AAA, C, or D, or the charger. The only ones I find are in a camera battery or something else. It seems they would sell billions of these if someone would make them and offer them.
Thank you for the answers that I did recieve. However, the batteries I found with the links showed 3.6 volts and not the 1.5 volts found in the standard AA, AAA batteries. It seems to me that 3.6 volts would fry my camera and maybe my flashlight too. Does anyone know?

besides cr123 size (like I use in my surfire flashlight) they do not make them in all the "regular sizes" because they are a different voltage and they don't want the consumer(read potential imbecile) to use the wrong charger or install in a device not made for them."

In terms of packable lithium ion batteries for airline travel, what can i pack? what can't i pack? I know there are restrictions on large lithium batteries and packing lithium metal and ion batteries in checked baggage. I have 4 AA lithium ion rechargeable batteries for my point and shoot digital camera, and also a matchbook sized lithium ion battery pack for my Nikon Digital SLR. Would I be able to pack all of these in my carry on?

If you want the longest lasting AA or AAA batteries, get non rechargeable Lithium batteries. Eveready makes them in AA and AAA sizes. They're very expensive, but they provide the best bang for the buck and when they finally go dead, they don't leak acid.
They have a shelf life over 10 years so they're good in emergency flashlights and radios or any device that sits around and rarely gets used. Also they will tolerate extreme heat and cold so you can keep them in your car.
They make AA and AAA lithiums. Pay no more than ~$9 for four AA batteries.
If you want rechargeable nickel metal hydride batteries get the GE/Sanyo Eneloop brand batteries. They're the only ones that won't go dead by themselves. They come charged and ready to use and retain over 80% of their charge after a year. Again, they're more expensive, but worth the extra cost.

rechargeable lithium batteries vs rechargeable AA batteries? The Kodak EasyShare M753 has a rechargeable lithium Ion battery, but I have an HP camera that I can use my own rechargeable AA batteries that I like. The Kodak is for my teenage daughter. Is this something that would need to be put on a charger each night? I like that my HP camera can use disposable batteries as well if I'm travelling and don't want to truck my charger around with me so I'm wondering if I could use a disposable lithium Ion battery with this as well. Thanks for any input!

If the Kodak EasyShare M753's lithium batteries are shaped like AA batteries, or are meant to be used as a substitute for AA batteries then you can use disposables as well (rechargeable vs disposable lithium battery packs that are meant to be used in the place of AA batteries can use any kind of AA battery). If the camera uses a custom, just for that model or line of model battery pack than you won't be able to find a disposable battery pack."
TheCat replied: "Kodak EasyShare M753 uses Li-Ion rechargeable battery KLIC-7001. It cannot use AA batteries. Li-Ion batteries hold charge longer than rechargeable NiMH AA batteries. NiMH batteries lose its charge even they are not in use. Therefore you need to charge the NiMH AA the night before you use the camera. NiHM AA costs much less than Li-Ion and you can easily replace them in a few years later."
HDN replied: "Your camera uses a lithium ion battery, which is not the same as a lithium battery (without the "ion"). You can charge it with the charger provided, or with a USB cable connected to a computer. As a previous poster mentioned, you don't need to charge it every night. A fully charged new battery should get you at least 200 shots.
It cannot use any type of AA batteries, rechargeable or non-rechrageable. A lot of slim cameras are made the same way now, since a Li-ion battery is a lot lighter and thinner than AA batteries (usually you need 2 or 4)."
